As a result of a change in the fourth-form mathematics curriculum of the secondary school many mathematics teachers are supposed to teach useful applications of mathematics to real problems. What are the experiences in the research project ‘Heuristic Education of Mathematics’? How can the teacher stimulate and motivate the non-specialist students? Which applied problem-solving abilities should be developed? The function of four representations is discussed: Problem transformation could often be characterized as translation from one representation to another representation.
