The concept of substance and some related concepts are being discussed within the scope of education in elementary chemistry. The chemistry teacher, in contrast to the chemist, should be aware of several meanings of words like substance, material and element which frequently occur in chemistry teaching and learning situations. The authors give a survey of the field, thereby comparing their own interpretations with these of other authors.
