A study was made involving a small group of 17 year old students, all of whom had been taught about ’temperature’, ‘heat’ and ‘energy’ in physics lessons at school in previous years. The students worked at a series of small tasks intended to learn them to distinguish between ‘heat’ and ‘energy’ as thermodynamic concepts. The research showed this wasn’t achieved. Nearly all the students still experienced ‘heat’ as something determining the temperature of a body in some way. Further research is therefore needed into a concept genesis of ‘heat’ and ‘energy’ as two different notions. The suggestion was made that it might be helpful to include an electrochemical cell and electric work in the discussion about the first law of thermodynamics combined with the ‘direct’ way of the same chemical reaction.
