Though the term ‘subject matter analysis’ is not unknown to educationalists, widely divergent views are held as to its contents. In addition carefully elaborated procedures for carrying out such an analysis are lacking as yet. This state of affairs is due to – among other things – differences of opinion concerning the meaning to be attached to the term ‘subject matter’. Two such conceptions are briefly discussed. Next in this paper the argument is put forward that from an educational point of view a subject matter analysis has to satisfy certain requirements in order to be of actual importance to educational practice.
