In mathematics and in mathematics education people use many words and expressions, originating from non-mathematical contexts. Searle views a metaphor as a relation between word (or sentence) meaning and speaker’s meaning. With this model the author analyses difficulties, that can occur when metaphors are used in mathematics education, although they are indispensable for the learning of new concepts. In a subsequent article some cases will be further analyzed.
