The introduction of a qualitative concept of chemical equilibrium is one of the research objects of the Department of Chemical Education at the University of Utrecht. This article reports on the present stage of the project. It contains an analysis of a dynamic model of chemical equilibrium and a description of an attempt to teach this model in an experimental course. It describes learning difficulties of students following this course concerning the model and draws conclusions with respect to a new version of the experimental course. Finally it discusses the educational value of this dynamic model with regard to a quantitative treatment of chemical equilibrium.
