The author delivered this speech at the 30th IUPAC-congress in Manchester U.K., 1985. By studying protocols of two teaching situations he argues that pupils starting from their daily-speech context have to make two successive changes of object in order to arrive at a chemical context in a discussion. Knowing about these two changes of object can help a chemist to be intelligible while using chemical language in the communication with non-chemists.
