Do academic physicists, because of their profession, have certain characteristics in common? This question is being analysed in view of its possible relevance for physics education both at a secondary and early tertiary level. Norms and values of the professional community, of the knowledge—gaining process and of the nature of physics knowledge are described. Confrontation with psychological research results shows that in general, research in physics corresponds indeed with certain personal qualities, which, to some degree, already appear to be present in pupils who opt for physics at secondary schoollevel.
