The present study has been focused on pupils understanding of concentration as an ‘intensive’ quantity. This characteristic of concentration means that the value of the quantity is not related to the extent of the amount of a mixture. Concentration is a standardized proportional quantity. Pupils at mavo/havo/vwo were asked to solve some concentration-problems concerning solutions which were poured off partly or were mixed with another solution. Their written and oral statements were collected and analyzed.
