It is often taken for granted that chemistry is taught in schools in a way that is more or less determined by an internal structure of the subject. The authors describe a structure of chemistry as a school subject. Their structure is a result of an analysis of chemistry textbooks used in schools in the present and in the past. In this structure the chemical reaction concept occupies a central position. The authors show that this concept, after having been introduced at a very general level from the start, is gradually being developed along two lines: centripetal and centrifugal.
