For eight years the subjects Chemistry, Biology and Physics have been offered in one joint course in the fourth form of HAVO/VWO at the Open Schoolgemeenschap Bijlmer. This course is called Orientation in Natural History. In the process of developing content and method the focus was on what the subjects have to offer to students aged 15-16. Another criterion was that, on their completion of this one year course, the pupils must be familiar with a number of modern scientific concepts that play a part in todays society. The integrated course proved to motivate pupils’ independence in exercising formation of theories and development of models. Only then is modern science well understood in its strength and limitations. This is particularly important for those pupils for whom this is their last education in science.
