In ‘burgerwetenschap’ (citizen science) nemen mensen van buiten de academische wereld, d.w.z. burgers, actief deel aan wetenschappelijk onderzoek.

NWO’s current strategy (‘Wetenschap werkt!’ 2023-2026) states in its vision for Dutch research in 2030 that “society relies on and participates in groundbreaking research because it makes an essential contribution to our future”.
In citizen science, people from outside academia, i.e. citizens, actively participate in scientific research. This is done in partnership and cooperation with researchers from knowledge organisations, and at different stages of the research process. The aim of citizen science is to generate new (scientific) knowledge and insights, and to strengthen the dialogue between science, society (and policy).
