Going from (chemical) research to textbooks a tendency toward presenting results of research as indisputable facts is noticeable. Since any trace of construction of facts is lost in textbooks, we think it’s harder for learners to internalize the introduced facts. The role of facts is studied in four cases. By two examples it is shown that fact-learning might obstruct progress in research. A third case illustrates changes of language in the process of fact-making, and by a fourth example we try to show how the process of what we call ’textbookification’ works.
