De Nieuwe Wiskrant berichtte vooral over nieuwe ontwikkelingen op het gebied van wiskundeonderwijs in het voortgezet onderwijs, zoals de vernieuwde tweede fase, ict in het onderwijs, de nieuwe plannen voor vmbo, zelfstandig leren, toetsen en examens, de A-lympiade, de Nationale Wiskunde Dagen, e.d.

In schooltexts determinants are almost exclusively dealt within the context of systems of linear equations. A geometric approach via oriented area and volume is not only more elegant from a mathematical point of view but also more recommendable in didactical respect. One of the advantages is its visual character: the calculation laws are based on simple geometric properties. Moreover it creates opportunities for investigation directed instruction, in particular if tied to the use of the geoboard. The connection between matrix and determinant can improve the understanding of linear mappings. To is connection can also play apart in a piece of beautiful mathematics, Pick’s geoboard formula.
