Nieuwe Wiskrant. Tijdschrift voor Nederlands Wiskundeonderwijs "Shadows and perspective" is intended for use in the 8th grade. However, various problems in this booklet are an introduction to fine aspects of classical geometry and could be used in more advanced high school classes. Shadows cast by cubes and squares are examined while using natural and artificial light. The conjugate diameters of an ellips are discovered while watching the shadows ofa turning windmill. The correct distance to regard a painting is determined by purely geometric means and it is shown by the same method that all quadrangles can be obtained as projections ofa square. A pa rticular projection ofa cube gives new insight into the orthocenter and the Torricelli point of a triangle. The article is a part of the teacher’s guide to "Shadow and perspective". |
