De Nieuwe Wiskrant berichtte vooral over nieuwe ontwikkelingen op het gebied van wiskundeonderwijs in het voortgezet onderwijs, zoals de vernieuwde tweede fase, ict in het onderwijs, de nieuwe plannen voor vmbo, zelfstandig leren, toetsen en examens, de A-lympiade, de Nationale Wiskunde Dagen, e.d.

In August 1981 experiments will start in the Netherlands in order to develop a new math curriculum for the last two years of secondary education. One of the main goals is to prepare students in a better way for the university. Not too much will change for students heading for exact sciences, except that attention to solid geometry will be increased. Radical changes are expected for the students who are not preparing for a study in exact sciences, but for economics, sociology, psychology and similar studies where mathematics is not the goal but a tool. The four main subjects of the new curriculum will be: calculus, matrices, probability and statistics, and automatic data processing, all of which will be taught with applications in mind. In this article the background and history of this new curriculum is sketched. Furthermore it gives a more detailed description of the contents of the program for the experiments this year (8 I-82), and information about the two participating schools. In 1983 some ten more schools, and in 1984 another forty schools will join the experiments. lf everything runs smooth the new curriculum will be introduced at all schools in 1985.
