The last issue of the present periodical contained a preview on the so-called HEWET project. This project includes a school experiment with “Mathematics A” which— rather than “‘advanced’’— means a new academic highschool programme appropriate to be taught students who will not be confronted with much more mathematics in their university curriculum though they are expected to use mathematics as an instrument. This means that in this instruction attention should be paid to working with mathematical models. Sceptics claim that for mathematically less gifted students the process of. mathematising is even more difficult than the mathematics involved. Are they right? Though not providing a direct answer to this question the few snapshots of actual instruction in the present paper provide a warning to be careful with such statements.
