De Nieuwe Wiskrant berichtte vooral over nieuwe ontwikkelingen op het gebied van wiskundeonderwijs in het voortgezet onderwijs, zoals de vernieuwde tweede fase, ict in het onderwijs, de nieuwe plannen voor vmbo, zelfstandig leren, toetsen en examens, de A-lympiade, de Nationale Wiskunde Dagen, e.d.

In August 1981 experiments started in the Netherlands in order to develop a new math curriculum for the last two years of secondary education. One of the main goals is to prepare students in a better way for the university. Radical changes are expected for the students who are preparing for a study in economics, sociology, psychology and similar studies. One of the main subjects will be matrices. The article describes the first month of experiments with student material about matrices. Distance- and connectivity matrices, and the relation with graphs form the subjects, within a geographical context formed by islands in the South Pacific.
