Handheld calculators and qualitative research in teaching. The research reported in the present and previous issues (see: Nieuwe Wiskrant nr. 1 and nr. 2, 1981) deals with the use of handheld calculators by kindergarten and elementary school children. It is three kinds of research: 1. Research on ideas of children about calculators and about their use of the calculators. 2. Research on dialogues in groups of two children during their use of the calculator for a certain subject. 3. Research on the use of calculators in real class situations. The aim of the research is: recommendations for instructions with calculators based on the use of handheld calculators by children. Besides towards the children’s behaviour the study is directed towards some mathematical subjects, didactical situations and principles that can be important for the instruction of the calculator. In the present issue the “expert cycle” comes up for discussion. To organize dialogues in that special way children are in better condition to teach their class-fellows the use of the calculator than without the expertcycle.
