De Nieuwe Wiskrant berichtte vooral over nieuwe ontwikkelingen op het gebied van wiskundeonderwijs in het voortgezet onderwijs, zoals de vernieuwde tweede fase, ict in het onderwijs, de nieuwe plannen voor vmbo, zelfstandig leren, toetsen en examens, de A-lympiade, de Nationale Wiskunde Dagen, e.d.

"A thing of beauty is a joy for ever". Is there such a thing as a beautiful calculation or a beautiful proof? Is it reasonable to ask from the average student that in stead of straightforward calculations he uses beautiful short-cuts? We teach mathematics as a useful subject, in many cases we have to limit ourselves to more or less mechanical algorithms. As a mathematician we find our pleasure in wonderful tricks and sometimes in proofs that are little gems in mathematics, but of such a level of creativity that 99% of ourstudents would never be able to find such a method by their own. Some parts of mathematics are just like poetry, many people can reproduce in, some can really enjoy it and only a very few can produce it. What about didactics and these flower gardens of mathematics?
