Abstract
Even though Pre-Service Teachers (PSTs) in the Netherlands already teach mathematics lessons in their internship, PSTs rarely succeed in applying their theoretical knowledge from their master studies to their classroom practices. Research suggests that engaging PSTs in classroom experiments in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) could address this issue. During classroom experiments, PSTs innovate aspects of their own classroom teaching in their internship, based on didactical theory from their master studies. Subsequently, they reflect on the success of these innovations in PLCs under guidance of didactic experts. This talk will present how online tools (MS Teams, Zoom) can be used to set up the classroom experiments and PLCs in a hybrid format. Furthermore, preliminary results will be presented that show the many challenges that PSTs face when trying to innovate their teaching practice and to learn from it, from traditional orientations about mathematics learning or their limited proficiency to notice relevant events in-the-moment in class.
